We are proud to be accredited with the Basic Skills Quality Mark.

The accreditation is to recognise that we place an emphasis on improving the provision we offer in English and Mathematics, and show high-quality practice and performance.

The Quality Mark states "without these ‘basic skills’ of good communication, English and mathematical skills, individuals are disadvantaged throughout their lives – as learners, in the workplace and as parents, consumers and citizens and so they form the ‘bedrock’ of a good education."

The elements of the Quality Mark include:

1. A whole school strategy and planning to improve performance in English and mathematics.

2. An analysis of the assessment of pupils’ performance in English and mathematics.

3. Target setting for the improvement in English and mathematics.

4. English and mathematics planning and intervention for all groups of pupils.

5. Review of progress made by all groups of pupils in English and mathematics.

6. A commitment to improving the skills of staff in the application of English and mathematics in the school.

7. The use of a range of teaching approaches and learning styles to improve English and mathematics.

8. The use of appropriate teaching and learning resources to improve English and mathematics.

9. The involvement of parents and carers in developing their child’s English and mathematics.

10. An effective procedure for monitoring planning and assessing performance in English and mathematics.

We are proud to have achieved the Silver Equalities Award. This demonstrates a fantastic commitment to equality throughout our school - an achievement for the whole school community to feel proud of.

The Award has been designed by a team of equality and education experts to allow schools to fulfil their statutory duties to:

  • Eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations (Equality Act 2010)
  • Promote community cohesion (Education and Inspections Act 2005)
  • Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism (Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015)
  • Safeguard children and promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (Education Act 2002).

The accreditation recognises how Devonshire Road Primary School ensures that equality and diversity practice flows through all aspects of the school and showcases a commitment to equality through Behaviour and Welfare, Leadership and Management, Personal Development of Pupils, and Teaching and Learning.

In May 2021, the school was awarded with the Inclusion Quality Mark. The full news story published on the IQM website can be found here.

The full report stated that "everyone is part of the team. It is a very happy and successful school where all are welcome. They pride themselves on valuing every child and helping them to achieve all they can, whatever their unique gift or talent.

In relation to the curriculum, it states that it "inspires and motivates pupils enhancing the pupils’ learning through visits and visitors linked to curriculum themes which enriches their experiences. They encourage children to be independent learners and thinkers, developing them as responsible members of their community."

We are very proud at Devonshire Road Primary School to be accredited the Investors in Pupils Award.

Investors in Pupils (IIP) helps pupils find out about their school, the school budget and the jobs of everyone in it. The award aims to support children in setting targets for their class and for themselves whilst recognising the importance of the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in their education, and how they as pupils, can make a difference.

Target Setting

Children in each class are encouraged to set their own targets, as well as a target for the entire class to work towards. The children regularly review their targets to improve continually. This then helps them to achieve one of our 3B's - Be The Best You Can Be.

Class Promises

The children write class promises each year, thinking about the class ethos and how they believe they should behave in the classroom. All children in the class agree to the promise and sign them before they are displayed in the classrooms.

Induction Booklet

Each class has made an induction book to help new children and staff to understand what happens in their classroom. They include lots of information, for example, details about staff who work with them, pupil jobs in the classroom and weekly routines.

Class Budgets

During ‘Investors Week’, Key Stage 2 children investigated the school budget to find out how the school spends its money. The children found out how much resources cost and now have their own budget to spend on resources for their class. Children also interviewed Mrs Branagan to see where all the money goes and how much it costs to run a school.

Governor Roles

Governors speak regularly with the children and are interviewed by the children about their roles and responsibilities. We also carry out whole-school assemblies, where the roles of Governors are discussed and explained.

We are so proud at Devonshire Road Primary School to celebrate the reaccreditation of our Leading Parent Partnership award. Here are some quotes from the assessor, governors and parents/carers that reflect how, at Devonshire Road, we endeavour to ensure that parents and carers have a positive experience throughout their journey with us.

  • ‘Evidence showed how parent partnership is embedded in school procedures via a detailed Parent Action Plan with three clear aims.’
  • Governors said 'the school takes a whole school approach to parent partnership and communication has improved with staff learning from the approaches used to communicate with families during lockdowns’
  • ‘Parents feel that the school communicate with them very effectively, they think that all the staff are approachable and easy to talk to.'

What is the LPPA award?

The Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA) is a national award that shows our commitment to parents, carers and our community. The award is recognised by the DFE and is externally validated. It is designed to help strengthen and enhance the relationship between parents, children and their schools.

What difference has parent/carer involvement made to our Devonshire Road School family?

Over the last few years, we having been working hard to ensure parent/carers and our community continue to build strong links together. This is to ensure we all work together to give our children and our families a sense of belonging and importance. We have seen children flourish in the acknowledgement that all stake holders (parents/carers/staff and our community) are working together.

What does research show about quality parent involvement?

It is clear that children do better and achieve more when parents and carers are involved with their child’s learning. Parents, carers and family members are by far the most important influences on their child's lives. Research shows that becoming involved in the life of your child's school shows your child that their education is important

As a part of our commitment to all LPPA stakeholders, we believe that parental involvement improves a number of aspects:

  • Transition - support parents/carers as their children transition through or between schools.
  • Participation- include all groups of parents/carers in supporting their children's learning and developing their own learning.
  • Communication - take steps to ensure that the school is a welcoming, communicative and friendly place for parents/carers.
  • Guidance - provide clear and accessible guidance to help parents/carers support their children's learning and development.
  • Induction - provide clear guidance on the responsibilities of parents/carers, school and pupils, and share this information with parents as a key part of the induction process.
  • Home–school links - produce parent/carer-friendly policies to establish effective home–school links.

Recently in 2022, we have been awarded with the Certified School Status from National Online Safety for showing a whole school commitment to online safety.

As a school, we ensure that our entire school community is as up-to-date as possible in regards to issues regarding online safety and potential risks, and this was recognised by National Online Safety. The certificate shows we have an effective approach to ensuring that we we educate pupils in the safe use of technology, and enabling trusted adults with the essential information to identify risks and escalate them where appropriate.

Our website page dedicated to Online Safety has much more information on about our approach, and can be found here.

Our most recent Online Safety policy can also be found on our policies page.

In 2023, Devonshire Road Primary School achieved the Gold Picture News Impact Award. The accreditors felt that our whole school project to reduce food waste has been a fantastic learning journey for all our children, our families and the wider community. The waste warriors did a fantastic job of weighing all the food waste, and our plan to help support the youngest children was commented upon as well.

We will continue to make an impact across the school and in the community, showing all children that small changes can mount up together to make a big difference.

Well done to everyone involved in the accreditation!

We have recently been awarded with the 'Silver' Primary Geography Quality Mark for leading effective whole-school approaches that support excellence in Geography.

The report states "There is clear evidence that geography as a subject is alive and well throughout the school and there is a great sense of pupils not only enjoying their work but being enthusiastic about the subject too: the school was buzzing with geography activities, displays and work, all of which demonstrated the importance the school places on this subject area."

Over the 2017-18 academic year, the school worked towards the Primary Science Quality Mark, a nationally recognised award which celebrates a commitment to excellence in Science teaching and learning. We are extremely proud to have achieved this award – well done to all the staff, pupils, parents and governors on this achievement!

Primary Science Quality Mark Information

We have achieved the School Games Silver Mark Award for the 2021/22 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme to reward and recognise school's engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

We are proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including the young leaders who made our events possible. We are committed to using the School Games to try and engage all pupils in sport and to try and ensure they have a positive experience and want to try out new activities beyond school.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas linked to the five School Games outcomes and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

The United Against Bullying programme is the Anti-Bullying Alliance's whole-school anti-bullying programme. It supports schools to reduce bullying and improve the wellbeing of all children, focusing on those most at risk, including children and young people with SEND, children and young people who experience racist and faith-targeted bullying, sexual bullying, homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, looked-after children, young carers and those on free school meals.

The overall aim of the programme is to establish United Against Bullying Schools. These are schools that have evidenced their work to reduce bullying and improve the wellbeing of all pupils.

We at Devonshire Road have recently achieved the Silver award for the above programme, evidencing that we are committed to reducing bullying and working with the entire community in order to do so.
