Reading Challenges at Devonshire Road Primary School

Reading and books are everywhere at Devonshire Road Primary School and this is promoted though the Reading Challenges we promote.

In KS1, we have the Superhero Readers Challenge. For every day that the children read at home with an adult, they earn a point towards their totals. Each milestone is rewarded with a certificate. The milestones for each new certificate are below:

  •  10 reads
  •  20 reads
  •  30 reads
  •  40 reads
  •  50 reads
  •  75 reads
  • 100 reads
  • 125 reads
  • 150 reads
  • 175 reads
  • Superhero Reader - 200 reads

In KS2, we have the Reading Challenge, which has Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum awards to earn. To gain each award you have to read a set number of books from a range of genres:

  • Bronze – 10 books from 4 different genres
  • Silver – 15 books from 5 different genres
  • Gold – 20 books from 6 different genres
  • Platinum – 25 books from 8 different genres

The books are recorded in our “Reading Challenge Award” reading diaries.

Certificates, badges, books, bookmarks and other prizes are then presented in our weekly celebration assembly, the children’s names go on the newsletter and a special reading display showcases all our amazing achievements.

Here's what pupils say about the Reading Challenges

"I like the Superhero Readers challenge because I like the prizes and certificates that I can earn." (Y1 pupil)

"The Superhero Readers is really good because it helps us read more at home, and this helps us with other things like spellings. I felt really proud when I got my certificates in the assemblies." (Y2 pupil)

“I really like the reading challenges because it helps me to read more. I already have my Bronze Award and it's motivating me to get my Silver next.” (Y3 pupil)

“The reading challenges push us to read more, and by reading more, it helps us get better at learning new things, too!” (Y4 pupil)

“The reading challenges are really good because it encourages us to get better at reading in general. The prizes are really good, too. I'm working on earning my Gold award to get a book voucher.” (Y5 pupil)

“I really like it because you get to read lots of different genres. The Platinum award is even more special, because it's got its own special shelf with beautiful books on which aren't in our class libraries - they're really challenging which is great!” (Y6 pupil)
