Reading Challenges at Devonshire Road Primary School

Reading and books are everywhere at Devonshire Road Primary School and this is promoted though the Reading Challenges we promote.

In EYFS, we have the Teddy Bear Readers. Children read 3x per week with an adult at home, and get their diaries signed. Each time they complete their reading, they get a special stamp in their diary. Special assemblies are then held to reward children with stickers, certificates and prizes.

In KS1, we have the Superhero Readers Challenge. For every day that the children read at home with an adult, they earn a point towards their totals. Each milestone is rewarded with a certificate in our celebration assemblies.

In KS2, we have the Reading Challenge, which has Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum awards to earn. To gain each award you have to read a set number of books from a range of genres:

  • Bronze – 10 books from 4 different genres
  • Silver – 15 books from 5 different genres
  • Gold – 20 books from 6 different genres
  • Platinum – 25 books from 8 different genres

The books are recorded in our “Reading Challenge Award” reading diaries.

Certificates, badges, books, bookmarks and other prizes are then presented in our weekly celebration assembly.

All of the above are shared in our regular celebration communications.
